Springsteen's releasing a new studio album this week and Dylan's releasing a greatest hits compilation. Which do you prefer from a legend: new material or time-honored classics?
No fooling, I'd prefer that Springsteen does a greatest Dylan's hits compilation and Dylan put out an album of him performing his favorite Springsteen songs.
This guy was the lead singer of the Dicks, Sister Double Happiness, and a band we were in together.
But twenty years after I dreamt of being the next Clash punk guy at my guitar lesson, Gary told me a couple interesting stories. Here's two:
1. He was a concientious objector during the Viet Nam War -- in Texas -- and explained how a volunteer agency guided this terrified kid through, and how neither of us back then could've done that.
2. The Dicks -- again, pre-80s Texas -- would play shows in front of their fans (think Big Boys, Minutemen, Butthole Surfers) -- their fans surrounded by armed police, the latter not happy with the giant backdrop banners of Trotsky and Lennin.
Inferred lesson: I'm not a punk.
Gary goes in my rock pantheon with John Doe and Mike Watt who taught me that just because you're talented and getting notoriety, doesn't mean you have to be a jerk...
And there are other categories of that pantheon...hint: one rhyhmes with "shminternet".
What? Embarrassed...okay. Samantha Fox. But it was a gift. A gift that I kept. For. Some. Reason...
